From Facebook: Socialism v. Capitalism

Tom:
*SIGH* Off to get the back-to-work haircut. Faculty meeting tomorrow. I need to make sure the bubble of Zen is fully inflated by tomorrow.

David:
Stop bitching about having to go back to work after 2.5 mos. off or I’ll vote against the next school levy on the ballot.

Jenni:
Tom, I feel your pain. I have been going through all my music and cleaning up my office for the beginning of the school year. No haircut for me, but I have to resign myself to no more shorts. :)

Juliette:
Tom teaches at a private school. No levys there.

Tom:
I vote against the levies too David. Public schools generally waste taxpayer money on things like unnecessary administrators and gigantic pleasuredromes they call school buildings.

David:
Doesn’t matter where he teaches J, I’ll vote against the levy out of principle. Also, you don’t want to get me started on the use of public dollars for religious (indoctrination) schools.

David:
I’ll give Tom the benefit of doubt. He can bitch about going back to work so long as he will agree that capitalism is flawed, admit he is a forced wage-laborer, and represent that we should be moving toward a socialist society. Otherwise, he lives in a capitalist system and therefore must recognize we all have to work at some shitty job until were old enough to retire, lose all of our savings because of health care costs, and then go back to work until we die.

Oi! Same arguments from both of you from like what 8 years ago? Don’t either of you try different approaches or change your minds? I’d think by now at least you two could agree to disagree.
And speaking from the standpoint of a parent whose child has a handicap, I rather you vote for the levys and take your grievances to the school board meetings, my child needs that funding.

Brett:
Hey, I give Dave credit, at least he’s one of the few who admits he wants socialism. Probably because he’s not running for an office of any kind.

Tom:
1) I will not concede that socialism is preferable to capitalism. Similar forces that corrupt a capitalist/free market economy also corrupt a socialist/mixed economy. Greed and immoral or unethical actions corrupt our free market system, while corruption, sloth, and bureaucracy ruin a mixed economy. I do not believe a purely government run … Read Moreinstitution is any better better than leaving things to the market. The answer is somewhere in the middle: a free market system with common sense, intelligent regulation.

2) I will never vote for a school levy because the current system of school funding in Ohio is unconstitutional. I refuse to vote for a corrupt, ruined, unethical, and unfair system by continuing to fund it. (See point number one). Until the Ohio legislature fixes the problem, I will not vote for a levy for any school district in which I live. Of … Read Morecourse, expecting government to solve this problem is a silly dream, because too many people have too much to gain from the current system. (See point number one).

And yes, I have worked more than my share of 12-14 hour days, although most involved waiting tables while I was young enough to still be willing to work that hard for that long for such little money.

Brett:
to shorten your comment further: expecting the government to solve the problem is a silly dream, because the government hasn’t really ever solved a problem, aside from making a damn big army. I do like that.

Well, like Jack Black says “I believe… That the children are the future. Now listen, you can teach them well, but buddy, you have got to let them lead the way. And let the children’s laughter…just remind us of how we used to be. That’s what I decided long ago.”
