I’ve been thinking recently about putting together a diagram or time line of the history of heavy metal music. I did a bit of poking around and the best one I’ve found so far is really very complete but not necessarily pretty. The real question that I’ve been horsing around with where does metal begin? The previously mentioned chart does a nice job of being thorough and inclusive, but if one were to pick the first metal band, the band that is the father of all metal, which would it be? Zeppelin? Sabbath? Someone else? To create a map of metal’s history, I must first decide where to start.
