Back From Vacation

My wife and I have been back from vacation a week today and already I feel like I could use another one. Of course, I didn’t want to leave in the first place, so it stands to reason that I’d like another week of relaxation and fun.

We visited the great state of Maine for our first vacation in two years. First it was to Yarmouth to visit my Aunt Maggie and check out the exciting and wonderful Yarmouth Clam Festival. I ate crab rolls, lobster, and delicious chowder. I got a cool T-shirt. I hung out with my 79 year old aunt who is so active, it hard to keep up with her. I heard stories of my familiy that I had never heard before. We had a blast.

Yarmouth is one of those towns you see in catalogs or on TV. It’s a perfect little New England town. Everything is beautiful. People don’t feel the need to lock their doors. Heck, we even put out our folding chairs Thursday night along the main street for the parade the next day, which started at six in the evening. No one bothered them. In fact, quite a few other people did the same thing. While in Yarmouth, I felt like I was in the middle of an ad for L.L. Bean whose flagship store, by the way, just happens to bee a few miles up the road in Freeport. (I bought a backpack).

After the town of Yarmouth, it was off to Bar Harbor, where my lovely wife and I enjoyed some more great food, a foggy and ultimately unsuccessful whale watching cruise, and an incredible hike in Acadia National Park. That’s right. I got my wife to go out into nature, on a trail, on a mountain. For those of you who know my wife, you’ll understand what a monumental moment that was.

Yeah, I’d say it was safe to say that I’d move to Maine if my wife would let me. I don’t even mind the idea of a long winter. But now we’re back in Ohio with a heat wave and new house to move into. Packing and moving in ninety degree heat are a far cry from the cool, clean sea air of Acadia National Park. I suppose that’s why we call it vacation. I just wish we could call it everyday life.

Happy Birthday to Me…
