Thanksgiving
25-Nov-99
Well it’s Thanksgiving and that has gotten me into a bit of a reflective mood. I think that the idea of giving thanks to the Creator for all of the cool shit He or She has done for us is a pretty good idea. Now, I subscribe to the Christian mythos of God as the Creator, and for ease of writing and clarity, I’m going to stick with tradition here and refer to the Almighty as a Him, but this does not mean that I don’t acknowledge the possibility that God is a She, or even more likely, whatever It wants to be. If you follow Islam or one of the other world religions, feel free to think of God as the Creator, and substitute the name of your deity as necessary. If you don’t believe in God, or at least the possibility of a Creator, then you are narrow minded, probably shallow, and you certainly haven’t reflected thoroughly enough on the nature of the universe and spirituality (no offense). In any case, I thought I’d take the opportunity a national day of giving thanks gives me to list just a few of the things I’m very thankful for, but don’t mention to God often enough.
First of all, I can’t be thankful enough for my friends and family. My loved ones are the reasons I am where I am, and who I am. They are part of me and very important. So thank you, God, for my friends and family because without them, I can’t imagine where I’d be.
I need to also throw out a big thank you to God for all the blessings that have been bestowed on me. In a country and a world where a massive chunk of the population lives in poverty, I have a warm, comfortable place to live, food, education, clothes, money, and plenty of opportunity to succeed in this world. Life could be so much worse than it is, but I have a good life because I have been blessed with good fortune. Thank you God.
I have also been blessed with an abundance of Grace, especially when I need it most. (Catholics out there will understand the concept of God’s Grace). When things get seemingly rough for me, and I feel as though I can’t deal with all the pressure, God throws a little Grace my way, and I always get through it.
Finally, I’d like to say thank you for this world. All you have to do is look around at the natural beauty and wonder of life and you’ll know what I mean. What an incredible and complex world this is, full of all the things we need to survive and live comfortably. It is a gift to be able to be a part of something as cool as Nature. It is a shame that we fuck it up so much in the name of economic gain and suburban sprawl. I don’t thank God often enough for just being able to live each incredible day. One day a year certainly isn’t often enough. But at least it’s a start and a reminder to, just once in a while, think about all the good things I have going for me, and to remember that I wouldn’t have all those things if it weren’t for Someone looking out for me.
Thank you God.
